SECOND EMPIRE

When a city was nearly destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt with elements of the second empire architectural style prominent at the time. Unknowingly, a distinguishable approach to design was established that has now become synonymous with the provincial island of Newfoundland.  Locally known as the ‘Southcott Style’ after the architect tasked with designing the re-build, our namesake, Second Empire Surfaces, is a nod to the familiar building style of downtown St. John’s.

THE ART OF INDUSTRY

The practice of blending craft with modern-day industrial techniques allows us to create materials with a resonating sense of permanence and beauty. We are building a refined sense of tradition- one with reverence for our rurality and our penchant for being resourceful.

SURFACES OF SUBSTANCE

As purveyors of creativity, it’s in our nature to unearth and unify ideas. To complement the interior materials conceived and made by us, we select fixtures, artworks, and objects that speak with the same intent as our surface collections- to create thoughtful surroundings that inspire those who reside within them.

THE UNION OF ART & INTERIORS

Our design team creates and curates artisanal quality wares, to form fully resolved, cohesive spaces.

SECOND EMPIRE HQ

Located in an industrial neighbourhood near St. John’s harbour, and former railway, we occupy a historic building once used as a footwear factory some generations ago. Surrounded by remnants of the city’s shipping and rail district, we are reminded of its many shops and foundries that now act as the headquarters for our design practice.
